This just in: American girls are mining the missing link between gay cowboys and fruity J-pop from the Johnny’s jimsho. Now, not only is it raining men (un-ironically, it should be noted) but it’s only a matter of time until the Shonen Club will have an opening for a new ranch hand on the spread.
In the wake of Brokeback Mountain’s sweep of the Golden Globe awards, the boy’s love genre has officially gone mainstream in America. Now, there’s an impressive amount of crossover going on between burgeoning Brokeback fandom, complete with homemade icons and wallpapers, and Live Journal communities devoted to imagining yaoi-styled mash-ups between Johnny’s acts like Tsubasa and NEWS.
I’d like to link directly to them, I really would, but girl otaku are fucking scary, man, and I can’t imagine any good coming from it, beginning with hate mail like “Shige and I PWN YOU AND KUSA SO BAD AHAHAHAHA XD”. But take my word for it. This thing is real. Think about it: Bareback could be a big hit in Japan, and Johnny’s acts could be the next Backstreet.
If only LJ had been around in 1969, or thereabouts. Then maybe something major would have happened when those Ultraman monsters briefly appeared in Midnight Cowboy.
