Yeah, the end credits features a montage of airbrush paintings in the style of the theatrical poster, but none of them is that identical piece. The second to last shot in the film is the same subject matter, only Malta is leaning over Sirius. Perhaps they deemed that shot too porkalicious to give away on the poster, opting instead to include it near the very end along with the Koike/Ikegami-esque classy depiction of spaceflight--naked, natch--as an otaku gratis for watching until the end of the credits.

Ya know, if you don't know what's going on in the story, one could get the totally wrong idea what's what with that poster...I mean, is he dead, or just the little death, if you know what I mean, nudge nudge.

But I think most deceptive ad vs. actual anime award still goes to Future War 198X. There's NOTHING going on in that movie that's as cool as the posters. Except maybe the (rotoscoped?) Disco scene.

It's like those US videogame covers in the past (and today, sometimes) that tried to hide the Japanese origins/'anime' style of the game. Suikoden's a great example.

Wow I didn't recall Syrius for frickin 26 years...

On the other hand Uniko was cute alright.

Did that "Legend of Sirius" poster have the felt background? And did it glow in the dark?

I think the trailer to the "Moon Phase" anime was the single most deceptive piece of trash advertising ever. Ohh... "Moon Phase" is about bad ass vampires like "Vampire Hunter D". No, it's just mo-e pandering crap.
