That was a great lecture! I'd love to see the slides that accompanied it, if you could put them up.
I thought the ending point was interesting too and a good way to provoke thought and discussion about the future of anime and how it'll change as different world cultures take it and adapt it to their own needs.
One thought though: at one point you quote someone who thought otaku culture can only pop up in a society without war - what about anime fans in Iraq? It'd be interesting to see what kind of culture they have, or whether it's mostly behind closed doors and across the internet, like the early days of Japanese otaku culture.
