I'm going to be on Bunka Hoso's 吉田照美のやる気MANMAN radio show tomorrow plugging the heck out of OTAKU IN USA. I should be on the air about 2:20 in the afternoon or so. In the best sitcom tradition, my voice is thrashed from hollering at maids all last week (and maybe a cold) so this could be some brutal shit.
Here are the facts:
『オタク・イン・USA』 パトリック・マシアスさん
オタク文化は、なにも秋葉原だけのものではなかった!!!アメリカでも、萌え~萌え~とうなってるオタクがいっぱいいるんだと。
1.) In 1964, Vladimir Nabokov warned Alvin Toffler about the mirai wa moeru; it was nevertheless a future shock he failed to predict:
"However, it should not be pronounced as you and most Americans pronounce it: Low-lee-ta, with a heavy, clammy 'L' and a long 'o.' No, the first syllable should be as in 'lollipop,' the 'L' liquid and delicate, the 'lee' not too sharp."
2.) In the Kinokuniya in Beaverton (huh-huh-huh) today, a faceless girl dressed in lolita goth read the lolita goth mooks. I say faceless because her hair swept like blinders out to face the magazine rack, and although sometimes she stood and sometimes she squatted, she held her posture rigid so as to always form a perfect box for her head. So (because a cosplayer wishes to be seen) you concentrated upon the fact she was really a hefty girl, really, not fat but hefty--chores-around-the-farm hefty, which is what black with lace trim mostly meant in the 19th century. And for all I knew she was down for the day from the Willamette Valley; the fancy things from Japan have been coming into this port for at least a hundred years.
3.) A cardboard box on the floor informed passersby that BOYS LOVE YAOI MANGA; English lacks the particles that might warn the gift-buying parent in time.
