For those of you wondering about the bars of color, Space Invaders was actually a black and white game. The screen had colored overlays on it, making each row of invader, the barricades, and your base appear to be different colors. Computers were capable of color back then (well, 16 of them), but it would have slowed the processor down too much.
The guy who ran that bar could do some amazing things with the on board sound. He's tweaking it to do something daffy in the second photo. On a semi-related note, Maruione.jp is selling some pretty crazy Space Invaders shirts...
