According to the OTAKU USA Animation Archives, this would be the second Panda Kopanda film. The first was released as part of the 1972 Toho Chamption Matsuri with a shortened version of Godzilla Vs Monster Zero and new kiddie-kaiju movie Daigoro vs. Goliath. So now you know!
Somebody has to get off their butts and get Daigoro vs. Goliath into the states. Get me AIP on the phone and get Peter Fernandez working on a dub script, pronto!
I've always been intrigued by the odd relationship between Goro (Katsuhiko Sasaki) and Hiroshi (Yutaka Hayashi) in the film. I believe that they are the first openly gay kaiju film protagonists.
When do guys, even in Japan, have picnics with little boys and have their house decorated with rainbows? Hiroshi is over Goro's house WAY too much. Even the best of male friends IRL only hang out weekly for a drink at a bar or two. I wonder if Jet Jaguar was built for other purposes and had other features not shown in the movie.
Is this the real Kojiro Abe? I ask because earlier this year I interviewed Jules L. Carrozza who told me....
“There’s a cemetery somewhere in New Jersey. If you’re ever feeling sentimental you can drive there, buy some flowers, and drop them on a grave…because that’s the final resting place of KOJIRO ABE!”
And remember, in that film from which Carrozza was paraphrasing, the character uses kung fu to break herself out of a coffin ands returns for battle after everyone think she's dead.
Godzilla and Miyazaki...two great tastes I never thought to combine, before. Is that the first 'Panda koPanda' or the second?

My mournful spirit still occasionally wanders the interwebs looking for just a single shot glass of LOVE!

Perhaps I have similar abilities?
