Crunchyroll News: Col. Sanders Cosplay Invades Japan for KFC Double Down Debut!

Abandon all hope who enter here: The infamous KFC Double Down finally made its debut in Japan on Feb/2!

Comedian and TV personality Atsushi Tamura (best known for being one half of the London Boots duo) risked his life by becoming spokesperson for the product. Invoking the spirit of Colonel Sanders via cosplay was par for the course, as Atsushi donned the white suit, string tie, goatee and glasses familiar to billions of "finger lickin’ good" fried chicken lovers across the globe...

The question of our age: KFC or Pizza Hut?

At the media event for the Double Down, Atsushi was made “marketing manager” of KFC for two days (a role he has been fulfilling on Twitter) and, as part of the deal, got a big certificate from an important-looking guy in a suit. 

Up next was a Col. Sanders cosplay costume open to the public. Contestants got a free Double Down just for showing up and then battled it out for the grand prize, perhaps the grandest prize of of all time...free chicken for a year!

Comedy group nibunnogo (above) next showed up in homemade Col. Sanders costumes. Admitting "Celebrities don't have any money, so…" the group showed off their pithy homemade costumes crafted from raincoats, tape, and T-shirts...

Some genius even filmed the entire KFC press event and uploaed it to YouTube (above) for future generations to marvel at. See if you can endure all one hour and forty seven minutes of it before you rush into the streets in a fright wig and white tights screaming for a Double Down to make everything all right again.

Crunchyroll News: Prison Food Is Better Than Japanese School Lunches

Behold, below, a very sad looking school lunch from Tokushima City, Japan. It looks like something you’d be given to eat as punishment after doing something very naughty, doesn’t it? We’re willing to bet that corn soup is lukewarm at best and the milk is room temperature. The final curb stomp is the is tiny junk food wiener placed next to an oversized bun as if to say, “Wouldn’t you like a big juicy hot dawg right about now?”

Now get a gander at a meal that a hardened Japanese criminal gets to savor like a king in his castle: five tasty items including grilled fish and barley rice with the emphasis on freshness and health. Hardly seems fair to innocent kids guilty of nothing except going to public school in Japan.

Nor is this fancy feast an isolated example! Here's an entire gallery devoted to delicious prison cafeteria food from all around Japan.

How can such mind-shattering unfairness be allowed exist in our fair world? According to Japan Probe, "It’s supposedly due to mismanagement of funds. The bread in the (school lunch) photo is made from rice flour, making it significantly more expensive than typical bread. It’s basically a subsidy for rice farmers. The leftover money is spent on very simple foods."

Try telling that to a grimy faced kid who will have to go to jail if he wants some decent chow.

I ordered a Teriyaki Whopper Jr.®, Regular Whopper® with cheese, Large Fries and a Large Coke®. Because that's what Americans do, goddammit!

World-famous manga-ka Denki Watanabe was pretty horrified by what went down, but enjoyed the Great Taste of the Whopper® sandwich as well.

The Royal Taster weighs in: Teriyaki Whopper® = good idea, half-hearted execution. Regular Whopper® = basically the same as USA, but with weird Japperknees® meat flavour. Fries = just about perfect.

Huge hamburguesa porno lined the walls to pleasing effect.

In the great Japan-blog tradition of “pictures of what I ate today,” here’s what I ate last nite! Rocking the new yakiniku-ya called Nikuzanmai in Kabuki-cho.

Crocodile meat, baby. Throw some on the grill for me. Tastes suspiciously like Totino’s Pizza Rolls.

That’s either ostrich or kangaroo. They also had bear meat for sale, but we were in a hurry. Can’t remember.

Slasher pointed out that most of the cast of Winnie the Pooh was on the menu. Yum yum.

Megaloss

'Tokyo Bust Pudding' found on the second floor of Tokyo Tower next to a bunch of Doraemon stuff for the kiddies. The packaging reads:

"A first-class cook seasoned these dishes with advanced techniques and highest-class materials. Please enjoy this 'tastiness.' This sweetness which cheers adult!"

Turns out, they sell fucking absinthe in the basement. Pernod 68. Original recipe. Kind that makes you cut off your ear, pen decadent verse, and collect a million plastic model kits and never build them.

It’s been the Green Hour here since about 5pm. I’ve even invented a new cocktail, one that combines and reflects the best of the Meiji, Showa, and Taisho eras…

THE MEISHOTAI

1 part absinthe, 3 parts ice-cold Mitsuya Cider (CM by Ohtaki Eiichi). The color of the louche should match the cover of your Mecha Godzilla no Gyakushu Movie Comic.

Drink until you can read it. Out loud. Especially the sound effects.

mainichi ni Koenji e ikimasu

The Ebisu Dagashi Bar. After work. A circle of salarymen sit at a table, chugging back beers, nursing shots of whiskey. So far, so normal. Then several of the suits get up and grab little wicker baskets. They make for the end of the bar where storage bins and glass jars containing brightly colored items are kept. Hands reach out and come back with candy, junk food, dagashi. Pop Rocks, powdered soda, candy cigarettes, dried-squid-on-a-stick, and even little breasts made out of white chocolate.

The place is fairly new, but designed to look like a rickety post-war tin shack. Old ads for Bireley’s orange soda and Jubei Nimpocho movies hang on the walls. Pink Lady and Kenji Sawada songs play from hidden speakers. A kid would go wild in here because of the candy, the Dagashi Bar was made for discriminating adults, looking for some sweet tasting nostalgia.

The menu is the usual pub fare: curry rice, yakisoba, and salads. But you can kick things up a notch by paying extra for the “Dagashi System,” which means all you can eat candy and snacks. And if your stomach goes nutzoid from all the booze, junk food, and curry, you can go for some Roman Orgy style relief in the bathroom, where the ghost of Yujiro Ishihara watches your every move.

So why the fuck you eat all that candy?
